Concrete demolition and renewal

Concrete demolition, servicing, and renewing. This part of the project involves the removal, disposal, and replacement of concrete slabs or blocks that are no longer performing as they should. Concrete renewal is a process by which old concrete is replaced with new concrete. This can be done in several ways depending on what area is being repaired/renewed (in some cases, we may have to break up the existing slab before placing new concrete). In some instances, it can be carried out from above ground level, whereas in others, this may not be possible due to access issues, etc.

We also undertake repairs such as crack injections (known as joint sealing), cleaning and resealing, filling of holes (such as tarmac repairs), and other necessary work to ensure that the structure is protected for years to come.

What is concrete?

Concrete combines aggregates (gravel, sand, or crushed stone, which may contain cement) and water with an optional chemical admixture that includes air entrainment chemicals. This creates a paste-like substance that hardens over time due to the evaporation of the water in it. There are three main types:

Ramped concrete – used where there will be heavy vehicles using the area, e.g., roads, car parks, etc

Screeded concrete – placed by machine on leveled surfaces such as halls, workshops, etc.

Exposure aggregate concrete – exposed to natural wear and tear such as patios and pathways.

Benefits of concrete resurfacing Before any work is carried out; the area will be surveyed to carry out a detailed analysis of the existing surface. Once this has been completed, one or more options for the repair/resurfacing suitable for your needs will be presented to you. This is done using 3D modeling software, so you accurately represent what’s involved in each option, allowing us to make recommendations based on our findings.

What happens next?

If you decide to proceed with a resurfacing project, we’ll start by removing any loose materials, including old slabs, pavers, and loose concrete. Next, we remove all debris from the site before pressure washing to remove any loose paint/mold or other contaminants. This is a very important step that ensures we don’t transfer contaminants into the new area.

What’s next?

We lay down a membrane (this can be made from materials including felt, rubber, PVC, and synthetic fabrics) onto the existing concrete surface before adding a top layer of whatever you decide on - this could be brick dust, portland cement, etc. depending on what you choose to go with. When everything is in place, we compact the mix using vibratory rollers and leave it for around 28 days before finishing work such as cleaning and sealing.
